I often don’t believe people when they say “both sides bad” so whatever, it doesn’t matter. Besides the point.

Hell, even the “lesser-evil” argument is just a reframing against consequentialism. If you aren’t a consequentialist you aren’t a person worth debating on the topic of voting for the lesser evil. So we don’t need to talk.

And even just on an emotional level: You aren’t dragging me and my friends and family into hell and then getting me to help you in revolutionary action.

People say this all day every year and are ignored. It was made incredibly clear last election what had to happen, and the democrats didnt do it. Stop absolving the party of blame.

Telling them they suck and then voting for them anyway is the Schumer example of a sternly worded letter. It doesn’t do shit. This method is what’s allowed the party to shift so far to the right, you are allowing them to do whatever they want with zero consequence. So like children, they keep testing your breaking point. We are now at genocide denial and that isn’t enough for most liberals to abandon them.

You can’t insult one without criticizing the other; they bOtH enable each other, they BoTh blame the other, neither one could maintain power without the other.

I vote in every election, and you should, too.

in a discussion about why democrats suck, talking about, republicans are not relevant at all. if someone makes a valid argument it does not matter if they are a republican.

“the dnc only back establishment candidates and will actively hurt progressive candidates even to ensure a republican victory” has nothing to do with republicans, and you can assume that i would make the same complaint of the republicans

The issue is the amount of bad faith critique levelled by people on the right. Supporting one of their valid criticisms without mentioning that they are normally full of shit appears like a blanket endorsement even though they may bring up only a single good point it’ll be seen as complete support.

Humans evaluate facts by the source. People trust their in-group. Someone is far more likely to listen to someone they trust and perceive as in-group than someone who’s out-group, regardless of the facts.

Sometimes this makes sense. If a guy in a nazi uniform told me the bar down the street is a great time, I’m probably not going to go there.

Your argument is one about an opinion, not a piece of critique. You are basically asking if the reader believes they would find a bar frequented by a man in an SS uniform enjoyable. This differs from the question: “If a man in an SS uniform were to point out that Kamala Harris is just as complicit in the palestinian genocide as Trump is, would you dismiss the argument outright, due to the dress of the man?”

While all critique rests upon opinion, not all opinion is critique.

In that case you’re just willfully misinterpreting clear language. Speaking like that “X is not treated in Y way” is commonly understood to have an implicit “should” substituting “is”. If your grasp of the English language is at the level youre demonstrating here, then you would also know that common parlance. So an extra level of being disingenuous.

On top of that youre still doing the thing wrong. Youre not presenting criticism in your analogy, but an opinion.

Would depend on the content of the critique Id think, like, if your criticism of the dems is that theyre far too conservative, thats not the sort of thing that someone that considers conservatism a good thing would say. If you give some vague attack on their moral character or intelligence or such, that lines up more with how the right would also criticism them, and therefore invites more confusion.

Hence why I said that your criticism should make it obvious where you stand.

I’m not saying that you need to put “fuck the GOP too” next to every criticism. But if all you say is “fuck the Dems for ruining the country”, it’s not obvious where you stand.

That’s a valid point. However it’s usually made clear by the next sentence out of their mouth. Like there’s an election around me that’s the same thing. The Republicans keep making ads about how corrupt and elitist the Democratic candidate is and they are 100% correct. However I ain’t voting for a republican if I’m worried about corruption. That’s their policy.

It’s easy to tell as the right’s criticism is they eat babies, they’re demon spawn, welfare queens, nothing true just emotionally applied rhetoric. Where as the left would say they’re barely better than Republicans in regards to wars and keeping them going in perpetuity, they could pass universal healthcare instead of what the ACA was but through either naivety or incompetence reached out to Republicans to help make a plan “both parties would be happy with” for the Republicans not to vote for it at all.

The primary difference is that Republicunts completely discount any thing that is left wing as impossible to achieve, often by using circular logic that boils down to a faulty appeal to authority (religion), with a light sprinkling of racism and white superiority rhetoric mixed in.

Leftists actually use verifiable data points and publically available economic figures mixed with objective reasoning to levy their critiques.

Reading comprehension includes understanding the implied context of the words, not just being able to pronounce them properly.

If you are too dumb to realize it, or worried about those too dumb to realize it, write your own posts. No offense but you are wrong headed and I don’t care how many half wits endorsed your point here.

How many times do you have to be wrong before you admit a mistake. That’s rhetorical, I don’t care what you think now.

Thats not what an ad hominem is you fucking idiot. You fool, you buffoon. Learn what the concepts you speak of mean, you absolute dolt.
An ad hominem isn’t “when you get insulted.” An ad hominem is when the quality of your character is tied to the quality of your argument - Something plenty of people do here all the time.
And you’re even fucking it more up, because the person isn’t even insulting you, unless you count yourself to be someone without a brain! Fucking incredible moronic self-own.

“You suck” is not an ad hominem. “You suck and your argument sucks” is also not an ad hominem. “You suck and therefore your statement sucks” is an ad hominem.
Now, an ad hominem does not need to make the correlation between character and argument overt. It is enough that the argument is dismissed on the basis of the person making it, though not every case where this happens will be an ad hominem.

          More examples:
“Youre a Russian propagandist and I dont listen to Russian propaganda!” <- Adhummer
“Youre a bot, so I dont have to engage” <- add hummus
“Typical statement from .ml users, youre all saying silly stuff” <- alt host

Calling you brainless is just calling you brainless. It is only when the argument is dismissed directly or indirectly through this personal demeaning that it is a logical fallacy. And it doesn’t even have to be an insult! But you’re too fucking stupid to see that, you just throw words around that you have picked up thru cultural osmosis without ever learning them. Idiot.

"Something bad happened and the Dems didn’t stop it. Let’s focus heavily on that specific item during an election in which it isn’t on the ballot instead of focusing on the 10,000 things that are.

The GOP won’t help with the Gaza war crimes. The Dems also may not in the worst case. So we can try to address a metric fuckton of crimes from this administration and allow the madness in Gaza to continue, or we can let the GOP go completely unchecked while still allowing the madness in Gaza to continue.

If you don’t have an answer, then refusing to vote for the Dems changes absolutely nothing for the Palestinians but is is tacit approval of the millions of deaths being caused by USAID cuts, bombing schools in Iran, all the ICE bullshit, and everything else Trump has done.

Once we reached a point where it was no longer safe to assume that Nazi shit and overt racism, bigotry, etc. was sarcastic, we all had to stop assuming that anyone knew we were better than that. That’s also when /s tags became absolutely necessary again, even when saying some absolutely bonkers shit. One month before ballots are cast is not that time.

And neither is two months before ballots are cast, or three months before ballots are cast, and of course when it comes to the general election year is right out. The end result is that the time where you shouldn’t criticise The Party becomes a nontrivial fraction of a person’s whole life, and especially the politically significant portions of a person’s life (given that “right before the election” would normally be a very good time to put a proverbial gun to the party’s head). You’re basically sacrificing a good chunk of democracy to protect the Democrats at that point.

Also if a dem candidate is running on a bad platform the relevant time to criticize that is while they’re running, since that’s the whole point of the platform. There are criticisms which make the most sense to mention at specific times. Trying to mention a Democrats anti-trans ad, for example, and how that negatively affects trans people after the ad is off the air and the election is over makes no sense.

Shamefully, good policy doesn’t win elections. Popular policy wins elections. Good policy is how you pick your candidates. Popular policies is how you get your candidate elected.

If that were true then you’d never had Harris or Biden as nominees. Universal healthcare is massively popular, as is almost every other common left-wing policy - No wars, less money for the military, fix infrastructure. These are all policies with majority support, they are massively popular.
Politicians get picked by an oligarchic elite that then manipulates the minority of the electorate who isn’t completely checked out or alienated from voting, into voting for their capitalist stooge. Anytime an actual popular candidate appears to get traction they are immediately hamstrung and sabotaged. This is not a bug but a feature of the democratic party and the larger duopolitic structure that masquerades as a “democracy”.

Exactly. People tend to be a bit myopic on the left. They struggle to look beyond their distaste for specific parts of specific people to see the ideal strategy for change.

Republicans get this in spades. Your campaign rhetoric is virtually irrelevant after the primaries beyond its value in securing votes. Securing state and local government control is critical if you want to protect (or disenfranchise) a specific voting bloc.

We’re so busy eating our own for not being good enough that we just end up losing.

I’m aggressively progressive - I support reparations, reducing funding of police in favor of mental health care, free health care for all, UBI, etc - but holy shit does the left have no clue how to achieve their goals.

UBI is cool, but I recently watched some videos by Hazel Thayer that advocate for Universal Basic Services instead. Basically, if you give people UBI that covers the cost of rent, you’re putting money in landlords’ pockets. And I hate landlords! Guaranteeing free social housing for everyone would fix that problem. We should have basic housing, basic food, basic medicine, basic education, basic clothes, basic electricity.

UBI is cool because it’s easy to implement in policy overnight. It would take one single bill to do it. But UBS is a recipe for a better society, with less wealth going to capitalists.

Valid argument and probably correct. You’ve certainly nailed the appeal of UBI vs UBS.

The only thing I’d consider “better” about UBI is some amount of discretionary spending and choice

I might be be happy living in a shoebox apartment in NYC and keeping extra money for food or entertainment, while you might prefer a nicer apartment with simple food and your existing library of books.

Bingo. Can’t do it after an election because it’s too early to matter, have to see how they govern first. Can’t do it during a primary because we need to focus on electability. Can’t do it for the general because we have to win.

You’re right, you do have to always be careful about how you criticise the democrats. There’s a technique to do it without radicalising people to the right. I’ve done it heaps of times.

Did I say that? Don’t put words in my mouth.

Well you’re echoing the people who do say that so it’s impossible to distinguish you without more details, but sure, in that case tell me: What’s your acceptable timeframe for criticizing the Democrats before the midterm and before the general?

Its always the right time to critique a shitty politician and the democrats suck ass. Buying into this “now is not the time” rhetoric is yet another in a long line of child-like tricks the DNC have got their voterbase to fall for. You don’t see the dems have the same expected unity for their own, if they appear slightly too leftist, nor do you see them have any such discipline for outsiders running in red districts.

        despite all available evidence.

Like what? Democrats running on deporting more people than Trump, democrats deporting more people than Trump, democrats throwing marginalised groups under the bus, democrats increasing police budgets, democrats expanding ICE budgets and authority, democrats doing fuck-all about Roe v. Wade, democrats committing genocide, democrats supporting foreign wars, democrats passing out massive fracking contracts or something else? Or did you mean how they probably wouldn’t have posted a mean easter message?

This is accurate. Many are actually accelerationists hoping for the collapse of the country as a catalyst for change. It’s poorly conceived and selfish in the extreme.

The degree to which ever single insufferable BlueMaga shitlib have simultaneously started bleating “accelerationist” constantly while never actually using it right really gives away the degree to which you all just receive your talking points and parrot them without even understanding what they mean.

What bluemaga podcast was it that had some guy appropriate the word “accelerationist”? I see you guys misuse it all the time now.

An accelerationist is not “someone who wants things to be bad.” It is a marxist tendency that believes because capitalists need to accumulate capital in order for contradictions to appear - which is necessary for the proletariat to become sufficiently alienated in order to rise up - then it is in the interest of the marxist to make this happen as quickly as possible, so as to bring about conditions fertile for socialism as quickly as possible.
An accelerationist will therefore vote for and support the most competent capitalist, because they will most efficiently accumulate capital. The accelerationist position is pretty commonly understood to be one that supports the democrats, since they are more competent managers of empire.

If youre going to throw concepts around, then learn what they are.

True, but i think there’s something to be said about moving past the democrats mediocrity and calling out directly the republican president leader of a global sex trafficking ring. Like yeah schumer sucks he’s pathetic. Let’s put that aside because donald fucking trump is still running the misnamed epstein child sex trafficking ring.

Democrats don’t really have clear messaging. Are we pro Muslim? Are we pro LGBT? Are we pro Marxism? Pro working class? Where do we stand on taxes? Equality? DEI? At this point I could tell you a lot more about what we’re against.

I like how the replies to this message are almost identical, starting word for word the same. Some needs to increase the temperature a little bit.

Being against burning the country and all alliances just to make 6 people rich is enough of a message for me Ina 2 party system. As a bonus on top, not hating mexicans, muslims and gays. I know it sounds like a low bar, but bar is very much that low.

What caused the president to win, was forcing uneectable candidates on the dems and then shouting down all criticism of them, as if pretending they aren’t worthless worked.

Get off your high horse, we knew what the republicans were, and what the democrats were, and we trusted the opposition to what is beyond any doubt the Controlled Opposition of the Oligarchy.

Anyone with a brain would’ve known anointed kamala with no contest was handing the election to the now president. Everyone. Oh, you weren’t one? What does that say about your understanding?

No offense but I don’t want to wade through your shit again forcing another doomed to fail dem on us.

What caused the president to win is people voted for him. After 4 years of scandals, corruption and a million deaths. Appealing to “anyone with a brain” is a losing strategy.

I am very interested in politics year around, and as a small reminder: the world exists out of america, each country with their own elections. The two year cycle is just in the US. There’s also popular media outside of the us.

Between the fact that the right will legitimately criticize the dems as well, and that they will sometimes even do so in a way that may actually sound like a leftist complaint either to A) point out that they don’t serve your leftist views or B) to try to add legitimacy to their character by pretending to be a leftist… you might still have to actively say fuck the GOP.

the average voter doesn’t have those two brain cells

Tired of “average voter” bashing, when the root of our problems isn’t with the working class to begin with.

They’re just a bunch of hostages blaming one another for supporting the wrong plane hijacker. None of them have any material control over policy or infrastructure.

Literacy and critical thinking are being actively sabotaged by the conservatives. You can’t pretend that isn’t happening.

The fact that the average American reads at a children’s level is terrible, but it’s kinda not entirely their fault. I’m not really trying to bash them.

There are people who are politically educated, who have good values and knowledge of the world and the ability to think critically. But they have one flaw. And it is these people I intend to bash for their incompetence.

That one flaw is, that they think everyone else is as smart as them. They don’t understand that not everyone had the same opportunities as them. They don’t know how to talk down to an audience. Trump knows how to talk down to an audience, and the uneducated people love him for it! But these educated people expect everyone to have the same political literacy as them. And they’re alienating those masses.

When you expect someone to be smart, you can make them feel stupid. A lot of uneducated Republican voters hate us university-educated city folk, because we make them feel stupid. There’s a rising tide of anti-intellectualism in society because we can’t talk to the people who haven’t been given intellectual privilege. We’re alienating them.

And it’s not exactly helping that I can go to a commie community and see “read Lenin or GTFO”. That’s not how we build class consciousness with the educationally underprivileged.

Most people get their political news from Instagram reels and chatbots quoting Reddit. They’re depending on us educated people, who they would call “elites”, to tell them what’s happening. And it is the Trumps of the world who understand that, who make those Instagram reels. That is why we’re losing.

That’s what Modi did in India. It’s what Murdoch did with the press. It’s how fascists always grow their influence.

We gotta talk down to people.

Literacy and critical thinking are being actively sabotaged by the conservatives.

That’s certainly the liberal line. I’ve seen conservatives say the exact same thing about liberals.

“Critical Thinking” gets billed as an objective analysis, but inevitably mutates into “if you don’t agree with me, you didn’t think about the issue hard enough”.

Ayn Rand’s Objectivists and Sam Bankman-Fried’s Longtermists have been beating the drum on “critical thinking” being deficit for their respective careers, and look where it got them.

Most people get their political news from Instagram reels and chatbots quoting Reddit

          That’s not even remotely true.

And herein is the problem. You’ve landed on a scapegoat that helps justify your disgust for “average voters”. But you’re starting from a premise of other people being inferior. And you’re working backwards into supporting claims that back up your gut instinct.

The average voter doesn’t vote. Seems like the issue is the average campaigner that cannot figure out a way to make themselves more appealing than a rapist with a spraytan, which is impressive given that many non-voters yelled out some pretty easy demands for all to hear.
