This is the first time I see a real airplane crash, and not some CGI simulation, the sheer speed of that aircraft is crazy to witness.

The last adsb ping had it descending at > 30000 feet per minute. That means they were traveling over 300 mph straight down. I’ve read about a large number of aviation accidents, and this is the first time I’ve ever seen vertical speeds that extreme.

Yeah this is a crazy accident. They basically plummeted from cruising altitude. The audio is devastating to hear.

Yeah, I was not ready for that audio. It happened so fast, but you could still tell how aware the pilots were of how unrecoverable the situation was. RIP, they didn’t deserve to go out like that.

I had to look it up, you’re not kidding. The pilot literally just screams their decent rate (22,000 feet per minute) and bank (60°) a few times and then nothing.

Do not click this if you don’t want to hear someone panicking right before they die. If you are not in a good situation to handle that, this is not for you. You gain nothing from hearing it.

Kinda thinking the same thing, but at the same time, what was he supposed to say? He’s probably shaken during it too and you don’t want to say anything to incite more panic, or try to be comforting but miss the mark and waste their last seconds of life.

And more precise, she was the ‘pilot monitoring’ (PM) meaning she handled all the comm tasks and everything not related to actually flying the plane. The captain was pilot flying (PF)…

Everyone should look for Captain Steeeve on youtube. This man handles this incident with the utmost dignity and respect, only broadcasting the relevant part of the ATC audio, not the entire piece. That is safe for listening. You can feel his pain reviewing the incident.

It’s how level the wings are with the ground. 0° means the plane’s wings are perfectly level, 90° means one wing is pointing straight up and the other towards the ground.

Though their pitch (nose angle) was so steep the bank value was almost meaningless because the rotational axis was almost perpendicular to the ground. So it didn’t really refer to the actual bank angle as it meant “this situation we’re in right now is completely fucked, I’m panicking but hoping I’m missing something useful in my panic so just calling out information in case it’s the essential piece of info to a solution I can’t see right now”.

It was more or less in free fall the entire time. Likely reached terminal velocity. They tried to roll the plane to get lift back which is why the plane is sideways, but they couldn’t pitch it back up.

One of the current theories is the stabilizers on the tail got obstructed or damaged by ice. They detached at some point before the crash. They were found a few miles away from the crash site today.

It’s looking like it was more likely 580mph or so, as the ADSB maxes out at 32k feet/min

Yeah, I’ve heard that too. The last few reports from their transponder seem to support that, since they are all the exact same value. I’ll be interested to see if the NTSB is able to extrapolate the actual rate of descent for the last few seconds. It doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, but it’s certainly interesting.

Didn’t that last hijacking attempt have then at -30000ft/min for a few seconds. This plane lost the horizontal stabilizer and the hijacked plan landed with no control surface on the vertical stabilizer.

it was the air Dubai incident. not sure if it’s properly called a hijacking since it was one of the pilots who attacked the other pilot. plane plunged during the scuffle and I think level flight was restored by a passenger that grabbed the yoke until relieved by off duty pilots who were deadheading in the back of the plane. part of the rudder or one of the stabilizers ripped off.

Allegedly an Israeli plumber saved a flydubai flight to Israel and disarmed the attacked during a dive like this. And the cockpit looked fine afterwards.

There was a recent plane hijacking attempt (by one of the pilots, no less) to perform a suicidal crash of the plane, the plane was en route to Israel with a lot of Israelis onboard, and they thwarted the attempt fairly heroically.

The actual question is implied by the statement turned into a question. “I don’t get it?” is asking for an explanation.

No, you’re asking if you don’t get it, even if your tone of voice changes while saying it. OP’s statement needed a period, a question would be “Can you explain the joke you’re trying to make?”

always crazy to me how the planes just disappear upon impact, it feels like it should be breaking the laws of physics or something
