I have a ~20 year old microwave oven. Probably before some sort of enshittification hit.
Samsung is also trying to block people from replacing the batteries on their phones with aftermarket ones

In the future, refrigerators will have AI connected cameras in them you’ll have to pay subscriptions to refrigerate your food. Put a frozen pizza in your freezer without paying for the frozen pizza addon and your freezer will shut off.
Even worse: The frozen pizza addon is an inseparable part of a package of addons that you have to subscribe to refrigerate something you actually eat, like ice cream, even if you don’t buy frozen pizzas.
The other items in the addon package are for frozen olives, cabbage, and nutmeg.
No other addon package covers frozen pizza.
God, you people could make anything sound bad! It just means those people freezing their cabbages get the pizza add-on as a bonus! Now that’s a deal! /s

The challenge of building a fridge is building a fridge that can run continously for years, if not decades without fail.
We have mostly solved that problem, it doesn’t need any smart logic or any fancy operating system to work.
Yes, but also improvements to its efficiency which we’ve also made great strides in but are backsliding a little on because of stupid shit like this. Large chunks of our always-on electric bill are these things, after all.
I mean, adding smart features is one thing, but letting those smart features control critical functionality is different.

Well, can’t say I feel sorry for people willingly buying smart fridges. I am waiting for the day when they complain that their smart toilet won’t let them take a shit in it.

Uh oh.
I will only be buying future appliances without access to the internet. If I don’t have to, I won’t be connecting them. The benefits are nowhere near worth it.
My dishwasher has an app. Thought it was pretty cool for about five minutes until I realised, if I’ve loaded it, I’m just going to press go. There’s never been a time where I load the dishwasher and don’t turn it on. Why do I need remote functionality. Removed it from the network after it wouldn’t turn on without me drying my hands, going to get my phone, and waiting for an update on the app.
Now the power button is hesitant to work, usually requiring multiple presses. Connected it to the internet again and it magically works fine again. Cut it off and it’s back to being finicky. Feels intentional.
Also had a pair of $850 Dyson air filters that had an app - actually handy because I could control the fan from bed without a remote and it had a graph with the air quality throughout the day which was interesting. Both were bricked by the software a month after the warranty expired. To the day. Screen just shows a little explanation point instead of turning the fucking fan on. They wanted $250/fan to repair them outside of warranty. Probably would have been fine if I hadn’t connected them to the internet.
I bet you they’ll still going to “break” one month after warranty, thanks to the reliable friend real time chip inside.

Yep, hence why I will tell anyone at any opportunity to never buy Dyson. Overpriced, over engineered crap. And anything with wifi connectivity that doesn’t really need it. It’s just spyware/adware, and will probably brick your shit after warranty is out. Sonos does the same thing.
I have one a Dyson vacuum from before the fans and it’s genuinely such a pain in the ass to use with so many points of failure that it requires babying just to use without dumping the dirt on the ground. I’m at the point where I’m looking to try and find bags for my 10 year old Miele to use instead because at least it works properly.

Anything with an app or android loaded on it is garbage. If it has a network port or wi-fi when it shouldn’t, Don’t buy it. I pay more to avoid it if i have to.
I believe they are also known for having shitty compressors.
Samsung and LG used Linear Compressors on their newer models, because they were quieter and more efficient.
But they took more strain, and when they blew, they threw chunks of compressor throughout the lines. That made them to costly to fix, and quick to break.
There’s a class action lawsuit against them. Mine lasted a year and I’ll never buy their crap again.
Glad South Korea’s population who bought these smart fridges get to beta test this dystopian nightmare and hopefully it never makes it to the rest of the world.
