We should adopt EU road signage (allowing Quebec to keep their ARRET signs), finish the metric conversion, and adopt their vehicle standards. For the last hundred years or so we’ve blindly copied the US regulations, and they’re clearly not cutting it. I don’t think we need to fully “become EU” but closely aligning with their standards would do a lot.

Canada will probably never be part of the EU, but they don’t have to. in the end the EU is like 7 different trade agreements in a trench coat. Canada can sign similar trade with the EU

With the downfall of America, an EU led block of alliances and treaties will emerge. Whatever that is called will be what Canada and other former American allies will be a part of, I don’t see Canada savings it’s sovereignty from America by surrendering it to the EU. The mutually beneficial nature of cooperation doesn’t die with American leadership, it shifts elsewhere. There is benefit in that shifting as historic US influence on those relationships are no longer blocking progress.

Pin the Canadian dollar to the euro, please. Make travel easier, please. Scrap Visa and Mastercard for whatever the card is they are developing (I wanna say wero), please.

Wero isn’t a card, it’s a mobile payment system that requires a Google or Apple approved phone unfortunately. Ain’t no escaping America with that.

I don’t think there’s any serious effort to have a payment card that’s not American but works across all of the EU. Some countries have their own cards though.

Well, the pin makes no sense. Our economies differ significantly and Canada benefits from a floating dollar.

But the spirit is correct, adopting EU rules and regulations for closer proximity to a common market makes great sense.

Oh look, Canadians happy about Euro imperialism, awesome. I wonder how many of you are going to be mad I said that and be totally reasonable about your own role in colonialism.

If you actually take the time to read the article too, you’ll notice they’re literally talking about inventing a status specifically for Canada; don’t expect all the perks that you people idealize about the EU.

Edit: oh look, the privileged Canadians think they’re too good to have their health sacrificed for the overlords; how different from MAGAts.

True, but this is a step in the right direction. Even if it only ends in greater free trade options for canada and EU members, that is a win. If there is any reduction to immigration restrictions in either direction for skilled workers, that is a huge win. Anything to distance ourselves from the crazies down south is a good thing.

That’s literally all they have to talk about to get you rubes on board. You like neoliberalism? Think it’s going well? Canada protects half the world’s mining corps, so what do you think would be the EU interest in “free trade” options with the Canadian state, and where do you think the cost of that trade is going to be pushed?

The fact none of you even ask those kinds of questions shows that you don’t actually know what colonialism is or why you’re a subject of it. Carney has eroded environmental and agricultural protections, First Nations sovereignty, and any hope of a break from privatized extraction of public resources for the foreseeable future. What exactly is the benefit of that? You think this is gonna be some fucking equal thing?

You know the EU is experiencing the same fascist movement as we are in North America (no, not just the fucking US, you people were about to elect one before Carney), right? Did you even check?

We get it, you don”t like the EU.

The idea of deeper ties with them is offensive to you.

What’s your idea to rapidly improve our economic and defensive position in the face of American aggressions ?

You know, you can do something you need to do while being aware of what would be a bad way to do it. You people are lying when you say this specific decision is necessary, and it shows. Or are you going to just admit that you did not even think critically about how the fucking people in charge of your life make decisions?

If they lower environmental and health protections to meet their trade goals, that is you and I living in the consequences. You people are fucking helpless.

Well, I can appreciate your sense of frustration.

The response itself lacks any qualifying element to support your position or provide a point of view worth considerIng.

It’s impossible to consider it an argument worth contemplation.

…I guess I’m just too thoughtless and ignorant to discern an actual point to your outburst.

Fascism and genocide does. You guys pretend that does to you too, but that’s normally fake. Again, why do you think it’s good to deepen those trade ties without criticism and consciousness around how this fundamentally genocidal system will use violence do facilitate that trade?

I thought you were all anti-fascist and pro-labour, is that just for show? You just self-reported the confidence that this violence wouldn’t effect you specifically, wonder where you learned that.

where do you think the cost of that trade is going to be pushed?

For now, it has been pushed into countries outside the free trade zone. Ukraine would have it much easier if it was in the EU free trade zone, for example.

So, in Canada’s case I’d say the costs would get pushed to the US.

What the actual fuck do you people think about?

Bud, if they cut pesticide health regulation to facilitate a higher agricultural output for EU markets, the wind does not care where it blows it. You ever hear of the Parkinson’s Belt? Are you people seriously going to pretend you’re anti-Trump, but you don’t care about axeing protections for the sake of capital? What the fuck is your problem with him then if you want to do the same thing, but for Euros?

(That wasn’t hyperbolic, BTW, they just did this with pesticides in Canada, wonder why)

Wouldn’t the cut in pesticide health regulation be meant to sell more to the US? We don’t like nasty pesticides here in Europe.

Dunno. Pesticide health regulations are tighter in EU than basically anywhere. Maybe they have other interests than joining the EU, then?
