Small rant on a related topic. For the last year+ (it may have been far longer, but this is when I noticed) tesco’s “Tesco Finest” line of crisps in the UK have been basically all vegan, if not all vegan straight up. Even the cheese flavour and the prawn cocktail flavour and the BBQ flavour and the steak flavour. A few months ago, they changed the recipes for nearly all of them, and now the aforementioned are all not listed as vegan, only vegetarian, and several list ingredients that make it explicitly non-vegan.

The reviews of the crisps before and after are actually declining, so its clearly not a better flavour. What gives? I have to assume they were already using the cheaper ingredients because, yknow, capitalism. So I can’t imagine it being for cost cutting. Whatever the reason, they’ve just destroyed a whole product line for vegan folks with a seemingly net negative on the quality at the same time.

    /end rant

I would be surprised if this is it. As an ex vegan, discovering salt and vinegar chips have milk in them blew my mind. This was some 15 years ago before our current obsession with protien.

I’d wager it has more to do with food science and how to make the food addictive. Vinegar being acidic, and milk being a base. I think its more likely this.

I don’t think those are real chips but pressed smashed potatoes. That kinda requires milk to work. It’s easier to use cheap bad quality potatoes that way.
