Microsoft Technology Licensing has published a brand-new patent application showing us a context-aware “ad credit” system designed to serve ads on PC and console gamers without disrupt…
What a strange question. Proton is pretty incredible, pretty much anything that’s not behind some kind of kernel level anti-cheat works on linux now. Native port or not, if people’s games work on something like the steam deck, steam machine, or other similar devices, then it’s likely people will swap when microsoft makes windows/xbox worse.
It’s become really easy unless you play mostly competitive shooters, or need certain professional software rather on your PC like photoshop or something.
As for your question, I can’t say exactly what game was the last one I paid for that is native, because I usually don’t even have to check. I know Mina the Hollower and Hollow Knight Silksong are native linux games.
You’re missing the fact Microsoft will force all Windows software to have ads. Proton&Wine won’t deter this encroachment. My question was more rhetorical, but it can indeed be taken personal.

Then you won’t be ready for when all software is required have ads on them, as countries are already requiring ID checks to run them. This train isn’t stopping until everyone collectively turns the switch.
That isn’t the impression I’m getting from the article. It doesn’t sound like it’s something that’s programmed into games themselves, as much as running on the operating system.
If you take a look at the patent itself, it specifically mentions
“…obtaining a promoted content trigger event from the interactive software application based at least partially on content of the interactive software application; suspending the user’s interaction with the interactive software application; and presenting promoted audiovisual content to the user.”
I believe this is something that’s primarily going to impact Microsoft store/Xbox purchases, if they do anything with it.
If it requires new games to send out pause screen triggers so it can overlay ads, I don’t see why wine would have to do anything with them.
Nothing in the article or patent implies they’ll be covering all applications you run on windows in ads. It’s specifically just for listening for a system call signifying that a game is paused, and then overlaying ads while it’s paused.
I think it sucks, I also think you’re reading too far into it. Microsoft doesn’t develop most windows software, and I’m not sure how you’re expecting them to force every windows dev to incorporate ads into theirs.
Wine/proton don’t have to recreate the system library that serves ads on top of your games, to have it serve ads for Microsoft.
If it’s a library that’s bundled in with a game release (similar to DRM like denuvo), then that has to be done manually for every piece of software. I cannot imagine it being realistic that every single dev bundles it in that way, or that it would last long before cracked copies of games strip it out.
what was the last native linux game you compensated?

They’ll stop your word processor to send you an ad. Non native Linux apps won’t cease this.
