Good.
Thats exactly the attitude I want from artists. Trying to replicate the thing that made you successful usually results in something that people will unfairly compare to your last project and will treat as a pale imitation.
The team at Sandfall seem to know what they’re doing when it comes to telling a story, and I’m excited to see what their next project is, even if it turns out to be something I don’t care for
I think that a good example of this, even when the studio consistently delivers good games, is Supergiant. Their games are amazing, but it feels their games are converging to a safe spot and becoming more samey.
Technically Supergiant makes game that focus on the narration, they never set out to make any special gameplay-wise other than the delivery of the story.
And also the fact that no one remember Pyre.
Pyre
Honestly I don’t remember ever hearing anyone mention Transistor since it released either. Hades definitely proved that they aren’t one hit wonders.
Transistor was incredible, I thought it was generally received as an improvement over bastion and people generally liked it
Transistor is great from what i heard, but just like Pyre it isn’t selling too well iirc, and i believe if Hades also failed they would’ve shutter.
Those games were never about brave innovation to begin with.
Sandfall CEO isn’t saying they’re going to be incredibly innovative either. They’re saying they’ll make the games they want to make and I’d argue the first 3 Supergiant games followed the same logic, they made the games they wanted to make and while being samey they’re also very distinct to a point where me enjoying Bastion didn’t translate to me enjoying Transistor or Pyre.
I’d say they didn’t start to feel really safe and samey until Hades when they started to incorporate player feedback into their development cycle. I’d even go as far as to say most players don’t want brave innovations and when given a choice they’d gravitate towards safer games. If brave innovations were appealing Noita would’ve been far more popular. Noita is such an innovative game you don’t even understand the scope of its innovation until you’re 60-100 hours in. I don’t even know if there’s ever been a roguelite metroidvania before Noita.
I don’t even know if there’s ever been a roguelite metroidvania before Noita.
That’s just because your knowledge is lacking, not because Noita is the first roguelite metroidvania.
I don’t even play the genre and off the top of my head I remember A Robot Named Fight and Sundered releasing in 2017.
Your smugness aside that just further proves my point because those two games are far less known that Noita.
Dafaq does this have to do with anything 😂 That doesn’t mean you get to dream up alternative history while fellating your favorite indie game, post it on a public forum, and expect not to be called out.
Shouldn’t be hard to praise your favorite game without making shit up.
Need an English lesson? Can you tell the difference between “this is the first Roguelite metroidvania” and “I don’t know any other game like this?” the difference is one is stated as a fact and the other is an opinion. Do you also need telling which of the two I used? I’m half convinced you do because you already missed the whole fucking point I made before.
Yeah I would have to agree. I think they are all very good games but gameplay-wise they are hardly crazy inventive.
And even saying it is repetitive is a bit weird when it is the first sequel they have done :D
I would say their narrative and their characters have a certain style. Quite introspective and interested in changing and connecting for sure. But otherwise the games feel like evolutions at least and mostly just as distinct from each other.
They all have a good polish when they come out though and I like how they iterate on feedback.
As it should be. I’m tired of a world where “whatever sells more” supersedes artistry, innovation, and charting new territories.
Art pushes boundaries, not complies with expectations.
Yeah. I’m tired of things being made for everyone… There’s a word for that. Slop. Inoffensive but completely lacking texture or spice
Make games for people like me. Make me something that brings me joy, or pulls at my emotions
And if you make something not for me, I’m not going to play it. And that’s fine, so long as the game is made for someone else. I can recognize quality even when it’s not my kind of thing…I respect that and wish the players a good time and the creators the success they deserve
I’m so tired of slop. We need good things in this cursed world, not more things
This has been true for a few years now, but indie studios have been making far more interesting games than the big studios. Add to that the fact that big AAA projects need to tack on tons and tons of money-making add-ons that degrade the experience in order to justify the cost of a decade of development, and the industry seems to actually be trending towards the artistry and innovation you mentioned.
Unfortunately, this isn’t applicable to all genres. It took pure action games nearly a decade to get to a point where we get a handful of new indies a year, and they’re not all good because it’s difficult and costly to get the genre right. It’s on a better path now, but there’s still a giant gap between the current output and the output of far more popular genres.
Just don’t “forget” to replace the ai placeholder textures this time you guys
Besides that, my only complaint with this game (and it is minor) is that I just can’t stand the UE5 slop anymore. I think Expedition 33 did possibly the best job I’ve ever seen with engine (the weird, amorphous detailed-but-generic textures didn’t detract as much as they usually do because of whole the painting-like aspect) but with everything else, like gameplay and story as strong as it was I would have preferred anything, even a low-res low-poly look.
Not saying UE5 is not a problem in the industry, but visually if someone wants realism, EU5 can do the closest games can do today.
I think that every AAA game is an open world action-adventure that roughly feels the same has very little to do with the UE engine itself.
I remember prey 2017 and the director for that game said the same thing. Man that was a fun game.
The only issue I have with that game is the title. There was no reason at all to call it Prey. It had nothing to do with the OG.
Time to buy expedition 33 even though I find it to be too expensive still. I usually wait a few years until I buy new games due to bug fixes…
sigh
opens wallet
I am a patient gamer™ to the max but if you’re going to pay a higher price for any game this year, this is the one IMO.
That’s good to know, thanks. I usually buy one or two expensive games a year.
I think E33 has been quite free of bugs a couple of months after launch.
Anyway it’s one of the best games I have ever played. In my mind FF10 & 9 are worse for sure. Even against 7 it’s not so clear.
I bought my copy through loaded: https://www.loaded.com/clair-obscur-expedition-33-pc-steam
Just in case you’re not aware, a lot of theses keys come from being bought with stolen or otherwise fraudulent credit card data. When the charge is eventually canceled the developer not only has to give back the money but also pay a fee, so it ends up costing them money for you have that copy.
If you care about the studio but can’t spend the money its actually better to just pirate the game
My understanding is loaded is a legitimate site.
