Oh my mistake, you’re right. Was rushing a bit, haste makes waste and all that.

Technology@lemmy.world•Easy-to-use solar panels are coming, but utilities are trying to delay themEnglish
1·4 days agoI agree with everything you said except shoe-in, because it’s shoo-in.
But you articulated (better than I was going to) the number one issue. Power companies need insurance and their insurance will be affected if ordinance permits basically unchecked generators being plugged into the grid. And before anyone says it, you are not allowed to just plug your generator into your house. Does it happen? Yeah, people have been dumb since day one.
But there are transfer switches that allow for this operation in a safe manner, and the easiest way to deal with this is to have them installed by default in new construction, and to provide incentive for upgrading your panel to include one.
NYC is thrice as dense as Berlin, the densest city in Germany. Probably accounts for something.

12·20 days agoYeah, my vinyl collection is a decoration. The 20TB of storage connected to my PC is where the magic happens.

Technology@lemmy.world•The U.S. spent $30 billion to ditch textbooks for laptops and tablets: The result is the first generation less cognitively capable than their parentsEnglish
3·23 days agoYeah, my 8-year-old has the chrome book, but also gets physical homework, paper and pencil. Dunno how it’ll be as she gets older, but I like how it is so far.
I was thinking about trying to find Mavis Beacon and somehow getting it to function on Windows 11. No idea if there’s compatible versions. But I used Mavis Beacon all the time growing up and enjoyed the games, made learning to type (properly) fun.

10·23 days agoThe laptops should be a tool, in addition to other tools. Being well rounded is the best thing you can be.

Technology@lemmy.world•Roblox Hit With Multimillion-Dollar Suit By Los Angeles, for Creating Largely Unsupervised Online World That Enables Predatory Pedophiles and Give Them Powerful Tools to Prey on KidsEnglish
4·25 days agoYeah, agree with everything you said. I let my kids play Roblox. I play with them sometimes, been playing some silly Shawarma game, it freaks them out.
So far, the biggest thing we talk about is this desire of every game to enter your wallet, and I tell them that a game shouldn’t be asking you for money, and now they both get annoyed at games that ask for money. I like to think I’ve created a safe environment for them to play in, and when the environment becomes something else, they ask me about it.
So mainly right now the worst that happens is the game is bullshit and they get mad, and I say hey, this game is bullshit (in more PG language), and we move on.
I firmly believe that prohibition just leads to curiosity. I think it’s impossible to insulate them from shit these days, so I’ll be part of their exposure, and hopefully I can help them learn.

Except people just straight up copy paste gpt output. At the very least people would say “I googled and got this result and that result.” We’ve taken what was minimal work and made it minimaler.
