Bit offtopic: I don’t know where you got the thumbnail, but that beer was probably really good. https://klosterbrauerei-weissenohe.de/ produce a lot of really good stuff for Lidl here in Europe at least, and especially their Hampstead gin.

And on topic, this isn’t the best look for SUSE. I looked up how many work at SUSE and it’s around 1900, so 10% people fired means ~190 people, almost 200. Rough.

Not sure where the thumbnails come from to be honest, I didn’t add, and I don’t see it on the article…

Considering this is a very small lay off, was handled extremely well and provided proper offers for staff to choose to leave instead of just surprising people. I wouldn’t call this a cash grab by literally any real means. Companies do lay offs, its normal. The only stated claim here is that AI is fucking the market and they are downsizing.

Which it is. Thats litterally just facts.

Theres nothing to indicate here least i can see, that says they are force rolling out AI to cash in on a quick buck.

10% is small? Wat? If someone reduced your salary by 10%, would you just go “oh, that’s minimal! I won’t even notice it!”?

And they aren’t saying the market is getting smaller. Nowhere does phoronix report that. You’re just making stuff up. With a more efficient workforce they should be able to pay more, get more work done, and handle more customers with the sane amount of people.

No. What they are doing is spreading the same work over fewer people who aren’t getting a pay raise, meaning 10% decrease in personnel costs, which the upper management can pocket.

Are you routinely trying different expensive enterprise distros?

Opensuse is not managed by the company.

His point is this is the frediverse and blind hatred of ai with zero nuance and no room for context or discussion is easy updoots. So gotta farm em while they are fresh.

To be fair this does suck, but from what im seeing here theres nothing to indicate that it isn’t anything more then a bog standard lay off. Ai is teh reason this time but its no different then any other lay off. They suck, but its not like they are axing 50% of their work force on purpose to replace them with ai.

They also seem to be giving out proper compenstation and even offered people the choice first before doing forced lay offs. Which is about as professional as you can expect from a company doing any form of lay offs.

Never was intrigued by this os. Always wondered if I was being somehow biased. Now I know it was just good instinct.

Now that I had found some stability and peace of mind using Tumbleweed. Oh well, I guess it’s time to start distro hopping again, not in the mood thoough.

10% is fairly conservative & you are not using SEL, but rather the community version. I think it’s not worth it. (plus it’s not like you can use a non-Linux kernel that does not have Ai contrib)

I will keep OpenSUSE for now. I expect to see similar layoff at RedHat and Canonical soon enough.
