Shares in Google’s parent company Alphabet dived by almost ten percent on Wednesday, after the web giant admitted AI-powered searches earn it less money than it earns by serving ads with its old-school search engine.

the growth in ad spend is publishers trying to buy back their organic traffic that google is pilfering.

that’s obviously not a sustainable position, just everyone panicking and trying to pump the numbers while they look for new business model and/or job.

A company that makes their money from ads in search results just finds out that serving results that skip their promoted results is bad for them. Them decision makers are gooood!

Seriously, it’s like power companies giving out solar panels.

I hope this leads to the great rejection. Google is generally just stealing content, packaging it up and trying to give it to you without crediting any source. I think now people are much more protective of said information, even if they publish it at all. I don’t know how long it’ll take, but there will be less to scrape and train models on as time goes on. Everyone will also start rejecting these AI queries on their sites too.

    Cost per search response skyrockets

    Unable to monetize search anymore

Happens every few years. I can’t tell you his hard I would eyeroll at conferences when some loser would ask a question about "what if you put blockchain in it *smugface. *

Motherfucker, what would blockchain do in this scenario?

has enough money in the bank that they can run at huge losses for the next 100 years

Google’s revenue from search rose 12 percent year-over-year to $63.25 billion, a little lower than the 14.5 percent growth the company reported in last year’s Q3.

It’s wild that it took a 2.5% search revenue miss to make them wonder if maybe this is actually dumb as shit. 🤔

Hah! I switched to Startpage for search because of AI search results being garbage, I am sure as shit not paying for it.

If I pay for any search at all, it’d be Kagi, not Google, which has turned itself into a slop fueled dumpster fire not just in search but with their phones too.

I used to use Assistant all the time, but they killed it and tried to replace it with Gemini, which is fucking terrible at things the assistant was great at, like setting timers, navigating hands free, and setting reminders. It’s so shitty I’m about to install Graphene or jump ship entirely to either iOS or just a dumb phone.

So far, the greatest driving force in me getting rid of all Google products is Google itself.

Irritated by Google. I heard getting banking apps working is kind of a pain in the ass though, how’s the experience been for you so far?

my banking app works, because it doesn’t require hardware authentication. This will be the case for all “correctly” developed apps, because usually, the “NFC payment” is provided by a second, optional app. That one doesn’t work.

All of my banking apps work perfectly. The only apps that don’t seem to work are Google Wallet (good riddance), FedEx, UPS, and Coinbase (I bought a very small amount of ETH many years ago and haven’t wanted to deal with the tax situation by selling it. I should just do so and then be quits of the horrible piece of shit company).

Google wallet not working means no tap to pay, which I consider a big loss. And none of my credit card apps (chase and capitalone) work outside of Google android, so that sucks.

Also biggest of all, old assistant you could go “find image source of current thing on my screen” and it would find it

I got Gemini forcibly turned on, tried the same, it’s not able to look at my screen

Turned that shit off first chance I got

It’s like Siri and the AI Siri, at least the way it was a few months ago.

I could ask old Siri what the date would be in the future (next Wednesday, for example), but trying that with AI Siri just gave back “Sorry, I don’t understand”. It somehow seems less capable than the old one, and seems to try and squish everything into ChatGPT. I didn’t let it do that, so it ended up being pointless. I ended up turning it off for old Siri, and even that’s worse without its Wolfram Alpha integration.

Maybe I should switch back to Google, at least for video game/anime searches, because it’s costing both Google and Fandom money. (Fandom runs fan wikis which are loaded with ads.)

The comedy is that Google can’t figure out when to vomit a search result instead of a bot chat: halfway through asking follow-up if you do use the chatbot, it’ll just shit a search result, laden with ads, and nothing else. But at that point you’re asking follow-up questions that should use RAG in the back-end; you’re not looking for “2012 search but with shittier results”. At the same time, I’d seen responses to complex “find me a badminton court near a subway stop that is open early Saturday” queries with a response telling me to go search; when, bitch, you’re the fucking search engine so YOU do it.

They’re also not getting ad payments from the website side, because people aren’t going to the websites, if they’re just stopping at AI search, and AI search is loading dozens of pages for them.
