got the notification to verify my age when trying to access NSFW posts or profiles already for a few weeks now, but as of today my whole account is blocked unless I verify. I guess that’s it then. Based in Austria btw, so there is no specific law in place that forces Reddit to implement this and I will definetly not give my personal information to Persona, a company that belongs to Peter Thiels Palantir group.

I know a handful of people that tried Lemmy at my insistence but found the overall culture even more insufferable than reddit and honestly I don’t even blame them. I fear that a lot of folks here are so desperate to “beat reddit” that they are willing to tolerate the most repulsive behaviors and it’s only going to push the mature people away.
I hope I’m wrong, but for someone who doesn’t care about decentralization, being “not reddit” is really all I can see that we have going for us.
reddits own bot/slop tells them what they want to hear thats why. i think the thing is reddit still has niche subs, that hasnt been impacted by the bots that much, hence its better than some ways. lemmy is too small and the largest communities are politics mostly.
define mature.
do you just mean people you agree with?
what do you regard as ‘repulsive’ behaviour?
when I was on reddit there were active sexual predators exploiting people on some subs and some of them were mods. nobody thought that was repulsive.
Hah well… for starters I would say emotionally mature people don’t tend to make demands of the people they’re replying to.
right, so mature people do what then, make assumptions about what you mean?
is it also mature to be defensive about legitimate questions asking you to be more specific about you general statements?
Culture in what communities? Because I mainly subscribe to tech and games and haven’t noticed a difference.
Same on reddit where people here talk about how they’ve been banned, but I just follow tech, games, and niche hobby subs there and not the big subs.
But, if someone is engaging in news related communities I could see how culture might be more negative. But, that’s been the case for all social media for that matter when it comes to heated topics.
The bad ones can be banned 🤷♀️
Totally but in practice they’re not, and that’s the issue, imo. We’re halfway to being Voat with a trans-flag colored paint job
People like that exist, but I just block them and move on and i really can’t overstate how much that changes the experience.
Unfortunately, Lemmy doesn’t have great mechanisms for avoiding harassment or toxicity - the ethos of free speech prevents the creators from wanting to allow users to hide their posts from others (a common solution implemented on other platforms).
Because of that, I get inbox notifications from blocked users sometimes (that I can’t see unless I unblock them), so I just -> Mark all as read. Negativity gone.
On the flip side of toxicity, I’ve found fewer toxic mods that rule comms like their own little fiefdom to arbitrarily police (only a single one so far) - on Reddit it was pretty common to encounter.
Yeah I fully agree re: blocking at an individual level, but I’m just saying I also understand why someone may encounter the fediverse and be turned away at the prospect of putting in so much work just to even see if they like it. Admins need to step up too.
Yeah I get it. I dunno what the balance is. It needs to be fun for admins too - else they get burned out and you get the Reddit style power-trip types as the ones that stay. I’m generalizing heavily… But my point is I guess if the community takes the lead in reporting and blocking bad users we can all help the load of the mods, while working around the limitations of Lemmy’s design.
Hopefully it will improve in time, because Im not disagreeing that those elements exist and are a deterrent to newcomers.
Yeah I agree with that. I think ideally the real “balance” is going to swing in wildly different directions depending on the instance and what kind of experience it wants to provide.
