Shows whether ‘AI’ is profitable yet or not by listing several companies which are related to, or primarily deal in hardware and software around ‘AI’ and showing their profits and losses.

Who cares if it’s profitable? Or is everyone suddenly a capitalist and cares deeply about profits?

I’ll keep hating AI even if it turns profitable, just like I currently hate many profitable corporations, industries, and billionaires.

It’s just an indicator of what to expect. Unless they can significantly lower costs, they will have to up the prices and/or sneak in ads.

They can keep running at a loss for as long as others are willing to burn capital, and so far it seems there are many willing to burn as much capital as it takes to replace as much of the working class as they can

no? i tried my best to perfect my friend circle irl but at the end of the day everyone thinks first and foremost in terms of money and profits at best, and is a raging capitalist at worst… and I’m in one of the places with the higher communist presence. most people irl just think in terms of money and how companies need to make money after all, while the average person has little to no regard for real human expression, so truly the best argument against ai, for at least the average person, is showing how economically unrealistic it is. people will happily put up with shady company practices if it saves them a buck, and if it doesn’t they’ll happily justify that the company needs to make bank. think of how many people merrily eat McDonald’s. i… really just don’t see how (almost) everyone isn’t brainwashed into being a capitalist. and I’m not even from the US. It’s easy to overestimate how many people agree with your opinion when you just hang out in, e.g. lemmy.blahaj.zone. Preventively clearing up: my tone isn’t intended to be aggressive or offended, I’m just autistic. And this isn’t an argument for humanity being evil at its core, just saying average dude is brainwashed and demoralized out of even arguing against the system.

We understand, we are autistic too thus we take things literally sometimes and thus “everyone is a capitalist” seemed like, not accurate to us because capitalism is a specific ideology and everyone being that seemed implausible.

Of course, yes, a lot of people will be obsessed with money because they are told it is what they need to survive (even though that’s not necessarily accurate, but sadly hyper individualism of the west is a thing).

But we aren’t sure we’d call all of them capitalist or at least everyone, we know many who aren’t capitalist, ourselves included, we care a lot about our friends and such without bringing money or commodities into our relationship(s) at all, we enjoy friendship, community and such because we like others, not because of money or anything like that.

What you say, if accurate, is very sad and we hope you can find a better place or way of living that isn’t all like that.

It’s sort of the one thing it’s at least theoretically supposed to do eventually. Otherwise why is everyone lighting money on fire at the altar of the slop machine?

  • Unless you’re Nvidia, in which case its only profitable because companies have 100’s of billions of dollars worth of GPUs sitting in warehouses uninstalled and therefore not actually being used for AI.

Can someone point me at an article/book that can ELI5 this whole thing for me?

Who started this AI idea anyway?

Is the government directly supporting it? [Like the Dept of Defense gives contracts to Boeing et al?]

Is the government supporting it indirectly? [Tax credits]

    Thank you in advance
