Canada is also founded on the principle that the natives can go fuck themselves. Remember that one of the very first acts of confederation was to send the RCMP to put down the Riel rebellion, despite their very legitimate grievances. The Metis are still suffering.
Confederation was in 1867, the Riel Rebellions were in 1885. Kinda a stretch to claim Canada was founded because they planned to do something horrible 18 years later.
There are indeed some very terrible things that happened in the past and John A. McDonald was a terrible guy. There’s no need for historical revisionism to make that point.

Yeah they wanted to build railways pretty early on. BC made it a condition of joining. Of course there’s nothing wrong with building infrastructure. What was very wrong was starving indigenous people off their land to make way for the railroad. But that happened in the early 1880s. At the time of Confederation in 1867 this sort of thing couldn’t have been considered since at that time since it wouldn’t be possible to starve indigenous people off their land since there were still Bison around then.
History often gets simplified and condensed. If it was over a hundred years ago things that were decades apart seem like they all happened at the same time. People were generally terrible back then. The opposition party in McDonald’s time did criticize him for starving indigenous people. Not for doing it, but because they said he wasn’t doing it enough.
I don’t go for the “he was of his time” excuse though. The John A. McDonald did terrible things. But should we define this country by the actions of terrible politicians?
