Nintendo aren’t a good company but they no doubt lost sales due to the higher tariffs and I don’t really blame them.
My opinion the tariffs are the US’s own fault they shouldn’t have voted in a moron.
They also don’t know what the current US adminstration will do next. As soon as the tarrifs were struck down Trump implemented new ones. And the thing is that he wasn’t even given as much as a stern talking to for implementing these illegal world affecting tarrifs. In other nations these would have been career ending.
I don’t like Nintendo, and even here they totally failed their communication because there was 100 ways to put this more user-friendly, but they are right in not issuing refunds. Things can go on sale, you don’t go and ask for refund because you bought it a few months before at full price and sue companies for not telling you in advance there will be sale, when and for how much discount.
They’ve ALWAYS sucked but had a very friendly face. Remember how they tried to ban renting in North America? They failed to do so for games, but they got their filthy clutches on the manuals so game shops weren’t allowed to rent those out. They didn’t need to do that but they did just to make the experience a little bit worse for us consumers.
Having said that… The US kinda fucked up themselves, so I’m not sure why Nintendo is being singled out.
because folks are bitter about they still charge $60 for a 10 year old game.
I’m not. I bought a switch 2 last month and Zelda BoTW for $70. It’s great. But what do I know, I’m a morally bankrupt bootlicker or something, because I was happy to spend my money on something that I am enjoying.
OK now divide the cost of the console over how many games you’ve bought
what? I literally just bought it 3 weeks ago. That number is going to be high because I only have 4 games.
I will buy more games as time goes by and that cost will go down. That’s how math works.
I also bought a PS5 four years ago, and only had a few games for it for the first few months… that’s how buying consoles/games works. Now I probably have like 50+ games for it, but it’s been years.
My mother bought me an NES when I was a child, and shortly after Nintendo lowered the price and they voluntarily refunded her the difference.
She told me years later that secured her as a Nintendo customer for my games for life.
This greed is disgusting, but more than anything it’s depressing.
i think you mean the store she bought it from refunded you the difference.
many retail outlets have 30 day price guarantees, sometimes 90.
Nobody was buying NES systems direct from Nintendo.
I was like, 5 when it happened, so I’ve never confirmed it, and my mother is definitely the kind of person who would misremember this kind of thing, but from what she claims she called them directly because they dropped the MSRP, not just a store price drop.
Take it with a grain of salt though.
back then they did, I doubt any have it now.
Hell, walmart wont even price match its own website… and like or hate walmart, thats the cheapest place in town to get shit so thats where most people, especially in this economy, will be shoppin.
it’s not super common but a couple times a year i will buy something and the price drops a week or two later and you can contact them to get a gift card for the difference. you aren’t going to get in in cash or credit in 2026 though. it’s 30 days from date of purchase for all the places i have done this for.
giftcards arent refunds.
They are a marketing ploy to get you to come back and spend more money.
Yep. I’m just an idiot. It’s not like I’ll go back to the store ever again and I’m a regular customer.
They are clearly ENTRAPPING ME. Just like all the times I returned a product and they gave me a full refund, that was also total entrapment. Or when I returned a product for a warrenty fufillment and they replaced it, also entrapment.
He’s out of line, but he’s got a point
what point is that? that companies are evil if they give you refunds in gift cards?
am i also evil when I get my nephews gift cards for christmas? because i’m restricting their consumer choice!
because 12 year olds care about what store they buy games from…
Sure buddy.
Sorry your mom’s greedy Nintendo probably
IMO I think it’s weird to focus specifically on Nintendo. The American government basically screwed over its populace and a ton of foreign companies (less sympathy for the former though). I don’t think it’s realistic to expect these companies to reimburse companies, because logistically it’d be a nightmare. The only way I can imagine consumers getting their money back is if the government used the tarrif money to pay a portion of the federal income tax for its citizens, ideally the lower tax vracket. Unfortunately that won’t happen.
lemmy seems to have a hard on for painting Nintendo particularly as this awful terrible corporation. Most likely because they are bitter they won’t lower their game prices. And they turn it into this weird moral issue and compare them to Steam as if Steam is the ‘good guy’ and Nintendo is the ‘bad guy’. it’s basically virtue signalling over consumer choice or something, instead of political issues. because only bad stupid people would ever own a switch or something.
I mean, cool. I don’t buy a lot of shit from a lot of companies because I also don’t find their pricing and business model appealing. But it’s not a moral issue in any way. There are far worse examples of course, too. Jeep makes objectively shitty cars for decades, but people keep buying them, and complaining about how they are shitty, for the lifestyle image/cool club they think owning a Jeep puts them in.
But you’re 100% right and basically no company is giving customers refunds over any of this because it’s already enough of a clusterfuck as it is to get their own refunds. But hey, let’s not let complex and costly reality get in the way of idealistic consumer entitlement over like $20 bucks, which even if they could give people the refunds, it probably would among to very little money. Even more hilarious is that folks who never bought the product still seem to think they should get a refund from Nintendo because they had a Gamecube 20 years ago.
“GUYS I DONT LIKE PEOPLE STANDING UP FOR THEMSELVES, WHY NINTENDO CUSTOMERS NOT BE LIKE OTHER CUSTOMERS AND NOT STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES!!!11!!!1!!”
yeah, your human rights are being violated, clearly.
meanwhile pharma companies are murdering people with drug costs, but this is where you draw the line. very brave and strong and smart!
Yes, because multiple things can’t be fought at once.
Big brain moment for you with that laughably pathetic attempt at a gotcha.
Nintendo: Just don’t buy anything from these assholes anymore.
Nintendo being anti-consumer is no surprise, but it’s nice to see someone tried to hold them to account.
So glad I personally didn’t buy a Switch 2.
By their own logic, they don’t have a right to tariff refunds either.
They want to eat their cake, and have it to. Will capitalism benefit the capitalists like it does 99.99% of the time? You bet your sweet ass it will!
99.99% of the time, it works every time!
I’m reminded of how Disney pulled most of their movie ideas from the public domain, and then pushed hard to try to extend copyright so that none of their movies would ever enter the public domain themselves.

Now that Nintendo greed is fully out in the open I hope a lot of their fans leave. The relationship should be symbiotic, not parasitic.
I doubt the majority of nintendo customers will be aware of this
I play my Steam Deck more than I play my Switch 2.
Likewise. The Switch 2 is a very nice handheld, but it doesn’t hold a candle to having a never-locked-down x86 PC in your hands.
it also costs half as much as a steamdeck.
you’re comparing a Civic to a BMW3 series and asking why the Civic doesn’t have leather seats and a 5K audio system.
If you want to discuss prices, discuss them fully. The Deck is more expensive, but the games are cheaper. And the day I bought the Deck I already had a massive collection, with many more games added for free from epic, giveaways…
Depends on when you buy the game. New retail games on steam deck are still 50-60 bucks.
I can also find massive discounts on digital games on switch. I just bought like a bunch of $5 or less games on the last eshop sale.
Does Zelda and Mario go on sale for $5? No. They go on sale for like $30-40. I also just bought Mario Odsyessy for $40.
I’m happy to pay these prices. Cool if you are not? Lots of people buy shit I would never spend my money on. I haven’t bought a gaming PC in 15 years, because it me it seems like a huge waste of money and time.
Almost as if other people have different preferences, and priorities than you do? And they are happy to buy products you are not.
Well, it does NOW. At the prices I paid the Steam Deck was only a bit more.
cool, and a few years ago you could get a switch lite for $200. still can, in fact.
I’m really not sure what point you’re trying to make here.
Is the Switch Lite the Honda Fit?
my point is everything was cheaper a few years ago.
the only console outside of my Steam Deck that i still occasionally use is my old Nintendo DS, because of it’s small form factor and my seemingly undying M3 card lol
I have a Cyclops DS flashcart from like 2007 that still works great. Some of the newer carts had time bombs on them so they could sell you another one.
I saw a DSPico on AliExpress earlier this year for less than $5 including shipping so I finally bought a new one because it works a little better on my 3DS and has slightly faster load times.
If you can still find the listing its a good buy.
Back when Nintendo made good consoles. My 3DS has been my daily driver since 2012, and so far only needed to replace the thumbstick because the rubber degraded. It’s a little tank and I love it.
I had to replace my DS because the hinge broke, which was pretty common back then. I scored myself a used one from the revision a few years back, where they made the hinges more robust.
The alternative being… not paying and still getting it, Nintendo??
Or would you rather no one buy or play games from you? I stopped a long time ago.
Nintendo had long since realized that their customers are kids who see Pokemon and Mario and scream at their parents until they buy it for them. They can charge whatever they want and those kids will still bug their parents until they get it.
Everyone else that buys their products is just a bonus if they still keep buying even after the prices get jacked up. Nintendo made their decision about who to prioritize, and the only boycott that would work to turn things around would have to be orchestrated by all the parents of all the 6 year olds in the world, and I doubt that’ll happen.
I never played more Nintendo games in a year and I didn‘t pay for a single one!
Its truly astonishing the vile depths that nintendo has sunken too over the past 15 years.
And they get away with it, because they have hundreds of millions of fanboys that couldnt give a shit about it, all they want is their next fix of mario and zelda, and will pay any price to get them.
Americans getting utterly fleeced and it’s fucking hilarious.
If only it were so. Unfortunately prices were jacked up worldwide to compensate. If only the Americans were paying the tarrif it would have been an extra $50-100 for the console in the U.S. easy.
americans voted for this. they wanted to be fleeced.
everyone told them tariffs were stupid, and they told those people to f off, they know better and Trump is a Really Smart Guy Who Knows What He Is Doing.
just my 2 cents: Nintendo did not raised the tariffs… and they neither profited on them…
But they did profit from the tariffs, as Nintendo gets the refunds but do not pass it on to the customers?
Does Nintendo get a refund? I thought the tariffs were paid by the people who import the product, not the manufacturer. Meaning Best Buy or Amazon would be paying the tariff and entitled to a refund, not Nintendo.
I guess there is also Nintendo NA, who might be the importer who then distributes to Best Buy or Amazon???
Nor is there anything ‘unjust’ about Nintendo retaining money that it may receive from the government as tariff refunds. The fact that Nintendo stands to receive tariff refunds does not give Plaintiffs any legal entitlement to those funds.”
so perhaps they did not yet receive the refunds, but if/when they do, customers can get fucked.
