unfortunately. I suspect quitting EU would make it even worse, we have our own problems with far right, borderline authoritarian movements on the national level. UK started this garbage after brexit.

just the basic lemmy.ml website.
i personally don’t care about posting opinions on an admin account, but they seem to be right. suspect it’s to do with living on the same instance.

the button is there, but clicking it does not do anything, can’t do it via the profile or searchbar either

we hope that this is temporary and fascist von leyen and her party will be gone soon. unfortunately, the EU is the only thing that prevents superpowers from steamrolling the entire continent. yes, if push comes to shove it will probably yield but apparently they don’t want to risk it, at least for now.

use end to end encryption if you don’t want to be spied on.
new information is created all the time, there’s no reason to not limit the amount that goes into profiling you. something as simple as not having your real name on social media already splits real and online life in two, with no obvious way to connect them.
it’s not the best but basically anything is an upgrade over chrome
are passkeys not a type of a hardware token? they’re tied to a device.
would be nice, but apparently i do not exist according to my bank without a phone on my person 24/7

If you’re willing to pay though, why not just spin up a VPS somewhere and run Tailscale on it?
It is some effort to set up, and VPS seems generally more expensive than a commercial VPN which has more nodes and other extra things. You’re moving your location which is cool, but multiple people use VPN nodes which serves as a mask because you can’t differentiate what traffic belongs to which user; You’re also still trusting whoever you rent your VPS from that they haven’t set up some sort of monitoring on a higher level before tailscale running on the machine can encrypt traffic.

Yeah, it’s funny when people shit on Linux just because people care enough to disclose vulnerabilities. Trust me that any proprietary system has just as many; they just get silently patched in this month’s security update.
Computers are finicky things; the amount of known CVEs is simply a measure of how many people pentest the software and how big the project is, rather than any statement about its security.

by their logic youtube itself is a piracy tool because it distributes copyrighted material.

killing copyright would also kill the licenses. If you want to say that copyleft licenses should be the default rather than ARR, i can go along with that, but would probably be hard to enforce in any meaningful way.
agreed, a tool that you have to actively fight to do something well is a garbage tool. it’s like trying to cut some chicken meat with a knife that’s magnetically drawn to living beings. You can make some nice diced chicken with it, but it is way more likely that you’ll slip up and cut off your finger than with an actual knife.
regardless of the original intention, the purpose of generative “AI” is to become a manager that’s out of touch with the actual creation process, so at best no one will know how something works, at worst no one will be able to fix it if it breaks.
