I know they paid a lot for it but I wonder how much of that infrastructure is really worth if no one wants to buy it

There was never a fucking “boom” just a lot of stupid money being thrown at the latest gamble, rather than investing in the boring, predictable things we know makes life better for people right now.

Honestly Flock went about things the wrong way. They should’ve just sold the surveillance apparatus directly to consumers.

I think what they want is confirmation that there are system or model instructions that explicitly mention dangerous or adult topics and that priming any LLM with things it can’t say is only going to make sure these words and concepts are within its context when it invariably starts to hallucinate.
Funny, I feel like it’s the opposite. I appreciate the use of a local LLM over renting GPU time, but unless you trained the model yourself I’m still not in love with the source.
Also it’s just made my entire field unstable and less fun.
Friend, you’re clearly getting tilted. Every single reply has a highschool tier dig tagged on for no reason.
You know you can have actual discussions with people in these threads, right?
Lol. “Look at it go on my personal project, wow I could never! I am a title worm! Go Sam Altman!” It really does work. What a great term haha

Probably the nicest way to put it, all things considered

Sorry we’re enemies now. We have to fight anytime we’re in the same thread. I wish it didn’t have to be this way.

I mean it’s clean room but without even having to pay highly skilled engineers to do all the labour. It’s pretty catastrophic to the field.

That’s exactly what I said—that I’m highly sceptical.
It would basically have to backfire on all their plans and all the trillions of dollars they’re spending.
It would be very surprising. I would be so surprised.

I’m incredibly against the big LLM SaaS providers and material waste besides. Anyway I don’t have a crystal ball and I’m highly sceptical that this technology will work out for average people, but it sure would be interesting if it somehow lead to less corporate control and cultural enclosure rather than how it seems to be going right now.

I’m more miffed about GPL or copyleft code going to proprietary software and then being profited from without any attribution. It’s a poison pill.

The article isn’t about how having one person do money work for corporations and another do actual work for people is a bad arrangement, but specifically about the “trad” movement as it relates to the alt-right and their backwards views on men, women, and children. And how it’s just… Not a good time.
“I no longer believe in extreme gender roles, especially when they’re wrapped in spiritual language and used to justify control, silence or harm.”
That’s a snip of the ideology that’s being contested. Notice it has nothing to do with the value of housework or how a single wagie should be able to support a nuclear family.
I feel like this might be describing just Instagram, because I have no idea what they mean by buzzwords and butter text. But from the images I’m assuming that’s Instagram.
Fedi is definitely social media and has many many problems, some of them perhaps inherent to any social media I’m sure. But posting sure doesn’t feel pointless here, it feels fun.
Edit: oh OK I wasn’t done reading. We definitely yell here lol oh boy howdy
Yeah like imagine free and open language models trained from the ground up on data sources from people who willingly want to contribute to it, rather than ripped from everywhere and anywhere by companies desperate to make themselves valuable before the VC cash runs out.

I didn’t mean to rail or express outrage, I just don’t care for content or engagement that doesn’t have an author.
I think what sets lemmy apart, other than the our superior protocol, is the high quality of genuine interactions. I’m not interested in personally sacrificing on that for anything.
Like I would call this a high quality disagreement right here—I’m fully bought in because I recognise your username from other threads and recall you have meaningful things to say that I believe are genuine and may actually change or alter my opinion.
It’s not that I disagree with anything the other account was posting, but that I believe they’re faking engagement, they give off influencer vibes, and I’m not in lemmy for either of those things.
I agree. I was on a bit of a different track, but letting your kids have access to an unaccountable statement generator is a horrible idea and should have been stopped at the board room it was suggested in, before it even made it to prototype
