Sir, I think you are overreacting. Nobody is running a 7+ Linux Kernel on a 486 machine. Even if you have microcontrollers with a 486 instruction set, I am pretty sure they already fixed the timestamp issue, or they don’t need Linux at all since it’s an embedded application.

Only George RR Martin in his little old Wordstar word processor would run on a 486 computer with DOS. And I doubt he is a Linux user, or if he is making updates to make his Kernel up-to-date with the current releases.

Yes, capitalism always relied on patents, copyright and trademarks to restrict access to knowledge or art, because those were products that needed exchange in order to return as profits. It tried to justify the existence of those as some kind of moral principle that everyone should adhere.
However, whenever moral principles clash with the profit motive, those moral principles will be conveniently thrown in the trash. So today those moral principles only apply to big studios like Disney because they can sue AI companies. Artists, developers, translators and others can watch their work be stolen, as they don’t have the means to fight back.
This is the problem with every white collar worker that is loyal to the tech, and to the company. For them profit is all that matters. Culture, Leadership, Innovation, Excellence, and other company values are nothing more than ideological stupidity thrown into you to make you accept your own exploitation. If they find any machine that can do your work, even with bad quality and costs, they will choose them over you. Profit seeking is the only true moral of capitalism.
What distro did you use? Don’t tell me you used Arch Linux… That’s not beginner friendly at all.
I’d advise you to use Mint or Ubuntu (preferably the first). When I have NVidia drivers I usually used one that is install through “additional drivers” app, because those are the ones which were tested for your distro. But if you have a really new GPU, there might be an issue because devs weren’t able to update the drivers and test them.
This “two sides” talk is just Western bullshit, so Western libs can signal some kind of virtue. We are in the times of Western imperialism and colonialism, and maybe we are seeing a distant light in the tunnel as the world seems to be finally getting out this damned era. The whole world has been shaped by Western colonialism, then two world wars, then liberation struggles against Western powers, followed by financial domination of Western institutions (globalism and neoliberalism). So every little shit any country has done in this context is a reaction to the fuckton of shit result of Western hegemony in the last 300 years.
Let’s not forget that even today any terrorist organization, any drug lord, any weapons dealer, any far right group, any right wing paramilitary group, any right wing corrupt politician in every country, any NGO that supposedly protects “democracy” or other bullshit, has Western putrid tentacles around it. Ever since they weren’t able to maintain active military presence in the Global South, they instead started resorting to disinformation, destabilization and sabotage.
So, no, there’s no two sides are bad. Until Western hegemony is completely over, there’s no bad side other than the West.
People can just make the old hardware alive by using an older Linux version. Why the fork is even needed?
