  • Make sure you also have dnssec set up.

Even with doh set up, your computer reaches out to a dns server and trusts that server is what it claims to be. There are reasons and history that explain this behavior but there are also attacks that take advantage of it. Dnssec performs cryptographic identity verification to make sure you are asking the real dns server where Pornhub.com is as opposed to some on the wire or in the cloud interlocutor that might direct you to a website that looks alike or just sends you somewhere else entirely.

Please read the following in the voice of Glenda the good witch from the wizard of oz, or SpongeBob, or some other character who is on your side and would never say something mean to hurt your feelings, because I am on your side and would never say something mean with the intention of hurting your feelings:

A person who benefits from this kind of explanation would be best served by mullvad over any other vpn because it is much harder to misconfigure mullvad in a way that undoes your privacy goals.

  • DNS over https. It transmits your dns requests over https encrypted using tls so that the device handling them over the wire can’t inspect them.

When you type pornhub.com into your browsers address bar your computer doesn’t fucking know what that is so it asks the dns server what it is. Because of history and reasons it asks in plaintext. So your isp can see that a dns request was placed to some dns server for pornhub.com. Your isp could also edit or intercept that request. Isp means whatever WiFi you’re connected to as well. Assuming the isp allows your dns request and the servers response through, your browser will most likely connect to pornhub using https. In that case the isp won’t be able to record that you looked up shrek slime butts sheet cake sitting videos but they will know that you visited pornhub.

    Doh prevents that situation.

I don’t know how you set up doh on your system because I don’t know what you’re running or how your dns is configured. I recommend you learn how to set this up yourself and verify that it’s working correctly so you can ensure your own security.

You also need dnssec, as noted above.

  • You do not need to keep replying to me with insults and vitriol. I’m not trying to fight you.

I’m trying to make sure that anyone who reads your comments understands that audiobooks are not in any way a substitute for reading. I want you and anyone who also listens to podcasts or audiobooks or even those long yts to understand that they are different things.

I think that’s an important thing to do because one of the biggest differences is the type of thought each one requires and reading the written word is associated with better cognitive outcomes as a person ages.

I want you to live a long healthy life so I’m still replying :)

  • If you understand what graphene is for and you need that then you wont wait.

Even if you don’t understand what graphene is for or if you need it and are trying to make a decision: graphene on new and used pixel phones works as expected now. It has been tested and proven against many different intelligence and surveillance apparatus. Motorolas new phone may not come out at all (it’s more likely than you might think!), may not end up supporting graphene (or graphene may not end up supporting it!) or it may have serious flaws that need to be addressed (it is a new hardware platform after all!).

If you need it now don’t wait.

  • If you could read youd be very upset by my reply.

E: it’s really cruel to just make a funny one liner response to you. Reading and listening are two wildly different types of cognition. There is no argument against that and I don’t intend to engage with anything you present claiming otherwise. If you want to win an internet argument by having the last word about it, here’s your chance.

For your own sake please incorporate reading, actual looking at the written word and translating it into ideas, into your life especially if you’ve moved away from doing so. The process of reading has been linked in many studies with improved cognition as you age. For your own sake and the sake of the people around you, read. Do not fool yourself into believing that listening or watching is the same as reading. It will only hurt you and people who go by your example.

  • If you’re just worried about your computer or whatever getting stolen, whole partition encryption at rest is the way to go.

That process also requires that you log out of or turn off your computer when not using it. Not everyone understands that part. If your computer is on and logged in when it gets stolen then someone could just not turn it off or log out and read all the data.

Of course that’s assuming you mean stolen by a criminal as opposed to confiscated. That’s a different thing altogether.

  • Don’t use a system you don’t understand.

There is no difference between deleting a file and encrypting it and losing the key.

Don’t start encrypting your shit if you don’t have a functional, operational, tested backup system in place.

Read the three sentences above again and make sure you understand them. Ask questions if you do not. It’s okay if you do not understand.

  • Here’s how to do what you’re trying to do:

Get a pen and pad of paper. Transcribe all your expenses last month from bank records, cc statements, cash receipts etc. write it like 7/23/26 citgo $17.45. Now total it up at the bottom. that total is the money you spent.

Flip over to the next page, transcribe all your income last month from payroll checks, pensions, investments, yard sales etc. write it the same way. When you total that up at the bottom you know your income.

When you compare those two, you will find out if you’re spending more than you make.

Now flip to the next page. Take all your expenses and transcribe them by category, like “food”, “gas” etc. now you know how much you’re spending on different things and can (if you have a shortfall, a situation where you’re spending more than you make) figure out where to find savings. Perhaps you spend time preparing take and go meals at home instead of eating fast food, or cancel some streaming subscriptions.

If you just did all that, and I did not intend this as a rhetorical device: stop and actually do what I just outlined, you will have a budget.

The point of doing this process isn’t to shake the austerity dead chicken at you, but to help you figure out what your version of the budget process outlined above looks like.

Did you find it time consuming to manually transcribe transactions from ledger to ledger? Perhaps your “budget software” is a spreadsheet package with csv formatted imports from your bank and credit card comapnies.

Did you have a hard time handling lots of cash receipts? Perhaps you need to switch to a debit card or use a receipt scanner or ocr software at the point of purchase.

Is it not clear what category something fits into? A software package that automatically sorts things into categories or a name lookup table in your spreadsheet will make that faster and easier.

Maybe the pen and paper method worked out just fine for you but you could benefit from an accounting ruled pad and a more comfortable pen.

You should be choosing software to solve a problem, but you don’t know what the problem is. The problem isnt that you don’t have a budget. Getting a budget is the goal. Working it out on paper will help you understand what is standing between you and that goal. That thing is the problem your software needs to solve.

There’s no point in auditioning software or taking software suggestions if you don’t know what the problem is. It’s like asking how best to move your dirt pile. Komatsu makes a phenomenal solution to this, but it’s 300k to buy and 2k to rent for a day. A shovel and wheelbarrow might be a better approach but if you just ask for the best software you’re gonna get people pointing you at very complex bulldozer packages like actual or intuit in the commercial accounting software world.
