I’ll say that (pre-)2016 OkCupid still was able to work like a charm without paying for anything. The idealized purpose of dating apps is, or was, to have you find the right partner that you might not otherwise would have found and you might have settled for a partner that you’re ultimately only okay with, because they’re the least-bad option in your area. These apps and websites provide a place where everyone has the expectation that they want to get romantic with each other (opposed to randomly messaging people on their website / social media profile) and also the wide range of the internet, connecting people that would have never met otherwise.

My story of 2016 OkCupid: I had freshly signed up for a week or two and my now-wife just returned from a long hiatus for only a day or so before we found each other with a 99% (at one, short, point even 100%) match But I recognise that even back then it was almost “are you sure you’re not being paid to advertise OkCupid?”-levels of coincidence

I wonder what all those Americans think of this, who constantly scream “Europe [yes, the Country™] has no freedom of speech because they arrest you for a social media post [that directly called for violence against other people]”

Alright. I had to read up again on why this is newsworthy in the first place. Because of the language in their new ToS regarding usage of user data. The article I read, asked why they would only now update their terms despite the California Privacy Act having been in effect for a while now.

I’m very sure, optimistically assuming they are honest and really didn’t change the way they handle user data, that an auditor found the previous wording of their ToS just not clear enough. Working in Quality Management and having attended quite a number of audits, this happens all the time. Company has a process for years, sometimes decades, but then needs to change the wording in a document because a new and overly by-the-books auditor will demand such to have it not only be “correct in spirit” but also “technically correct”. Nothing in the actual process needs to change.

Again, this is me assuming that they really havent done something different in the way they handle data. Isn’t Firefox open-source? Could some savvy code-reader go through it to see if something about the data collection has changed?

I’m German and my father is such a Trump fanboy, it’s sickening. I used to immediately debunk the hyperlinks he’d send to facebook or group chats, but he’s been pretty quiet to me lately. I have lost all hope of changing his stubborn mind until actual mass executions are committed, so I’m just collecting all this shit to throw in his face afterwards to at least get the satisfaction of showing him why I was against this coming regime long before mass executions.
