Kdenlive. It’s a lot like Sony Vegas if you have ever used it.
I’d say Kdenlive is pretty good. The UI feels a bit clunky and dated, but other than that it’s a capable video editing software.
Kdenlive - Worked the best for me, but has the worst name.
Shotcut - Seems feature rich and reasonably good
Openshot - Seemed more approachable, a little less performant.
Blender - I’ve heard it includes a good video editor in there somewhere, tho I’ve never used that.
Olive - I think was another Foss video editor? But it might be discontinued. Never tried it either.
I agree. Shotcut is great, and can do a lot. Openshot looks more simple, but is actually more difficult to use, IMO.
Thank you so much! Kdenlive is a popular suggestion so I’ll check it out
I like Kdenlive a lot but man, why is the Export feature-- y’know, the thing that let’s you EXPORT A MOVIE-- buried in some drop-down menu like it’s a minor afterthought??
Export always seems to be tricky in any software, by the time I got to Kdenlive it didn’t give me trouble. Between DAWs and video editors, I think Da Vinci really has it going on. I can use Kdenlive for short clips, but it isn’t fun to work in for very long.
I’ve only ever used kdenlive and it was adequate for my needs I use it only for very trivial editing tasks tho, so I can’t say about anything complex
Thanks!
I used Kdenlive quite a bit. If you’re not doing anything professional or don’t have TONS of edits over 30+ minutes, it should do the trick. The reason I say this because sometimes when I have spoken audio cut frequently, the first half a second has a weird blip at the beginning of it. Sometimes they show up in the rendered video, sometimes they only show up in the preview. It’s annoying as hell to go back and try to fix.
There’s also Blender’s video editor, but, man, it has a steep learning curve, at least, for me it did.
OpenShot is FOSS and they support Linux, Windows, and Mac. They seem to be dripping Flatpak in favor of AppImage, though. So that’s gross.
I use Shotcut, works well enough for what I need.
You can also try Kdenlive, though I have previously had problems with it where it just failed to work at all (have not tried recently). There is also a video editor integrated into Blender.

It has had a lot of development in the past few years.
I haven’t had a crash in … I can’t remember the last time. probably at least 2 years.
IIRC it wasn’t crashing, it was UI elements just not doing what they were meant to do. But I haven’t tried it in years, so I don’t remember it very well and certainly can’t say if those problems are still there.
Thank you!
Apparently the keyboard controls on Kdenlive are really good
