Proportional representation would make a huge difference. Either STV, or STV, or party lists. Any proportional system would be good.

Set up a working Democratic government that actually does something people recognize as good for them. So far, Dems are mostly known for bickering, not creating.

Fascism is capitalism in decay. The internal contradictions of capitalism become too much and it starts to collapse in in itself. To prevent this, it begins using the techniques of control perfected in its colonies to maintain control in the imperial core, that’s what you’re seeing now

The only way to stop it, and the only way to prevent it from getting much, much worse is to end capitalism and overthrow the capitalist government that is ready, willing, and happy to shift into fascism mode as soon as the line stops going up

Nothing short of a complete cultural shift will prevent that. A plurality of Americans are undereducated. To them, a tough talking Just Plain Folks poser is catnip.

Sorry sweaty that’s simply out of the realm of mature adult possibility for some fucking reason. I will now be accusing you of being a secret trump supporter or citizen of Russia, two things which are equally bad.

I couldn’t support a DUMBocrat because they bombed brown people. The only choice I had was to support racism, gutting lgbt rights, doubling down on fossil fuel dependence, bombing the same brown people the DUMBocrats bombed, gutting environmental protections, naked transphobia, raping children, bombing even more more brown people, and gutting the already under funded social services the US has. I’m not a Trump supporter though, I just helped him win the presidency.

Trump is one symptom of much deeper corruption in our political system. One that transcends party lines. Politician’s are bought by monied interests and no longer serve the people in most cases.

If we cant get the money out of politics it’s only a matter of time till another despot rises.

Trump represents the worst aspects in the USA and nearly everyone has a little bit of it in them. Just that the more self aware of us and compassionate have far less.

It’s not just politics. There’s an empathy deficiency across the entire nation. Toxic individualism will always lead down this road.

The fundamental problem here is capitalism because it’s a system designed to concentrate wealth in the hands of the few. As long as capitalist relations remain, nothing will change.

That’s the thing, we didn’t punish the confederates. Sure, we got the “government”, but not the planter class that instigated the war in the first place. Then Lincoln got shot and Johnson, their butt boy, let them off the hook. They got to keep their land, and more importantly, their political power, all at the cost of enfranchising formerly enslaved people. Then they proceeded to morph their classical slavery into modern slavery.

Every time an “elite” committed high treason in American history, they just get to walk, and all the working class people that get caught in the mayhem get fucked.

It’s happening even now. Maxwell is the only person imprisoned for the largest child sex trafficking coverup in world history.

Whoever has a brain, a gun and less than $1 million in the bank. Hell, even some uber-rich folks might join the cause.

And besides, if anyone has a gun problem, it’s America. Might as well make that bug into a feature. Y’know, wrong clock right twice or whatever.

If the rulers end up getting shot and school shootings give way to senate, town hall and courtroom shootings, maybe a positive change would come. If nothing else, guns would get controlled which would mean less school shootings judging by the Brian Thompson case.

And just to say - I’m not preaching political violence. What I am saying is that a bunch of dead adults is teeny tiny bit less terrible than a bunch of dead kids.

What you’re describing is a systemic collapse, and I think that is the most likely scenario in the long run. I was merely pointing out that there is no path to hold the oligarchs accountable within the framework of the current system.

    • The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
    • Someone else mentioned ranked choice and/or STAR voting. That’s a good one too for sure.
    • Maybe Democratic candidates not being dogshit-levels of unappealing to Democrats. Supporting Israel’s actions and telling anti-genocide protesters “excuse me I’m listening.” Being old as shit and swapping candidates after the primary. Trying so hard to pander to the center that they end up as far right as Republicans. It should have been pretty hard for Democrats to lose in 2024, but Democrats bent over backwards in every possible way to do so.
    • Impeaching and convicting Trump would go a long way toward improving Democrats’ relationship with their base too.
