I have been using DeepSeek, MiMo, GLM and other Chinese models for 6 months now and don’t see the reason to ever pay for US frontier models.

I do wonder what their funding strategy is? Is it just hosting the bigger foundation models? To me the most interesting aspect of the open models is taking the weights and creating specialised versions you can run locally on less compute.

I think deepseek is funded by a hedge fund, so im gonna assume its all about destabilising american businesses and therefore their share prices. Which seems to be working pretty well.

What’s in it for the hedge fund? I assume even Chinese hedge funds want to make money and sure disrupting US competition might be a pathway to that but just comoditising everything doesn’t sound like a good route to getting your investment back.
