Running a bunch of cron jobs across three servers - backups, cleanup scripts, report generation, SSL cert renewal checks. The usual stuff.
My current “monitoring” is basically hoping I notice when something breaks. Which obviously doesnt work.
Last month my database backup script was failing silently for two weeks because the disk filled up. Only found out when I actually needed to restore something. Not fun.
I know about healthchecks.io and similar services where the job pings a URL when it completes. Seems like the right approach but curious what everyone here is actually using.
Requirements are pretty simple:
-
Know when a job didnt run on schedule
-
Know when a job ran but failed
-
Dont need fancy dashboards or analytics, just alerts
Self-hosted options preferred but not a hard requirement if a hosted service is cheap enough. Currently running everything on Debian with systemd timers and old school crontab.
