“The most disappointing example of this was when the Queensland government recently invested in [630 diesel buses]. Just when Australia is running out of diesel, these chaps are accelerating the problem. I visited Europe for the first time last year, and one thing that I found interesting was that there were many electric busses - and they are so much better. (The entire trip was done on public transport only, so there were quite a few bus and train rides.)
The electric buses are far far quieter and smoother, and fresher smelling. They were quite nice to use. And by contrast, in Australia when one of our diesel buses shows up at a bus stop, whatever conversation you were having stops because the bus is loud (not so bad on the inside though), the air quality immediately drops, and while on the bus you can feel it shudder every time it accelerates.
Buses are really great from a transport point of view. They are very flexible, and efficient. But our buses are just not as attractive to use as the buses in London for example. Electric buses are definitely the future of buses.
