Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was thankful for the support of his governing alliance so he could stay in office. But he faces an uphill battle when it comes to keeping his reform agenda on track.

Exit polls have the far-right AfD leading the Social Democrats in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Left Party ahead in Berlin. Merz referred to the outcome as “a disaster”. DW has more.

The left party in Berlin won with messaging about expropriating commercial landlords to provide affordable housing. That’s pretty close I would say.
