I have always set up prefixes manually or via steam/lutris/etc but I guess more likely just having wine installed would probably create some kind of mime type association for exes… and you’re probably right that just running from whatever file explorer would likely launch it in wine without needing to chmod.
I assumed wine needed the flag, not the exe file, as the program being executed is wine.
