Europe has always had a lot of professional high end thieves, could be real. But yeah, it could be some funny business for sure. Hopefully if so the insurance company rains hell on any billionaire’s bullshit.

I think the usual routine is to take it apart and sell the individual stones to people who don’t check for markings and metrics that identify them.
Jobs like this usually happen because they already have a buyer. It’ll sit in someone’s “private collection” until they die, then it’ll be surprisingly discovered.
