For me: after setting up all the integrations and fall overs using the arr stack and Jellyfin (inc Sabnzdb etc)… I keep circling back to Nova video player.

It’s arguably not even self hosting…but there something undeniably cool about sticking a USB stick into a router, installing a single app on your TV and boom, done. EDIT: of course, it can consume the *arr stack, integrate with Ombi etc
IOW, I really like stuff that simple to set up and punches above its weight class.
Selfhosting Lemmy has been surprisingly nice
Does it have any particular benefits over using a random public instance? All I’ve heard is mostly needing heaps of bandwidth and storage.
Since I already host a bunch of stuff, it hasn’t been a big burden for me. I get to laugh any time one of the popular instances goes down or has some admin/mod controversy, but the tradeoff is I have to manually subscribe to everything since I don’t have an “All”.
I mostly did it because this is the only way to truly own your lemmy identity. I hope one day it will be possible to link accounts on different instances together so that migrating doesn’t lose your history.
That’s a good point… was just looking into how I’d go about backing up my post+comment history and the only answer is basically “you need to use a special tool that pretends to be a lemmy client and fetches your history item by item”. I guess “host your own instance and migrate to that” is another one.
Which is surprisingly silly for what was supposed to be a more open platform than others. Heck, I can submit a GDPR request to Reddit and get a full dump of my account within the hour.
