I am just so jaded by now. Choosing something like Ente to store my photos is going to be a big effort. In 5 years they might also go down the drain again, because you never know. Or their leadership changes and suddenly they are interested in scanning all your pictures for whatever reason.

For me it is really hard to go with any subscription service ever again, not just for the regular cost (which makes sense for something with upkeep cost like Ente) but also for the effort of moving data in but potentially also out again, investing into implementing it into my personal workflow of saving pictures.

Maybe sounds unreasonable for others but for me this is a big hurdle to tackle.

Ente has a self hosted option and is open source. This is really the only way to provide the stability you want.

If you’re going to self host I would personally recommend Immich though. I think Ente is great if you do want a cloud provider and no overhead.

Its been a while since i last Followed them but I think they have an organic growth company and wont fall anytime soon. From what I know they just Profit Off of the subscriptions, no ads and thats what they pay the Servers for and i think they arent vc funded

Right now I self-host everything. I have Immich as a management tool, but I use Nextcloud through WebDAV to sync photos from my phone. So I can just freely switch between management tools and file servers, as long as WebDAV is available, without changing my workflow.
