I get that now. When I read:

Unfortunately, this is a national poll

I took that to mean the upcoming election was national.

In the US at least we sometimes use poll to refer to election, e.g., “Pokemon GO to the Polls”, “Immoral Poll Tax”, etc. It is unfortunate.
