“By and large, many voters tend not to scrutinise them or to hold [anti-establishment parties] to that same level of accountability that they would do, the more established parties,” Dr Manwaring said.

This is really true. Similar thing happening in Australia with Pauline Hanson it’s so weird and nutty that she gets a free pass on obscene gifts from wealthy donors while everyone else is held to account.

It’s because they do not claim to be moral in the first place. They are vehicles for the flaming ire of resentful voters. Destruction is their goal.

They may suffer criminal consequences (although the entire point of having a rich billionaire friend is not having to obey the law) but they won’t lose votes.

I don’t think they necessarily have a goal.

In the case of Pauline hanson, she just says things that idiots are thinking, and in return those idiots think she’s representing them against the establishment.

I don’t think Pauline really believes she is destructive. I imagine she thinks she’s a voice of dissent and enjoys the thrill of being disruptive. Theres probably some narrative like “they need a big shake up” but no one really knows what that means or why that would be a positive thing, it’s just a phrase. “The people want consistency, as well as change”.

The panacea that I think Farage has encountered, is that you can’t be anti establishment forever, sooner or later you become established.

This has been a thing since before Shakespeare wrote the line, “Let’s kill all the lawyers.”
