The guy went on a lobbying trip to DC and was heard by GOP folks and not dems. So what? That’s all we know. Were dems busy that day? Did he try a different approach when he talked to the right. Anyone can go to DC and be heard or ignored on a lobbying trip.

Also, the content creator of the video was not vetted for sponsorship because they don’t usually do that. They admitted fault and are changing procedures to appropriately vet moving forward. I think their marketing team might even be external. Also, fascists never admit fault or accept accountability.

This sounds like big tech doesn’t want competition. You’ve seen google prevent side loading, and do a ton of shady things at this point. Why not a smear campaign too?

Thus guy might be a raging fascist dickhead for all I know. I’m just pointing out that the supposed evidence falls short and proves nothing.

  1. Concerns I see are that Proton encourages you to import spam from your last account

  2. They were lobbying in the US (there are good reasons to do that though)

  3. They send your gmail notifications that you have new Proton emails along with details of that email if you use your old gmail as a recovery while transitioning - just use a different recovery email

None of those actual concerns have anything to do with far right ideologies.

The accurate term is “installing”, not sideloading. Sideloading is a term used to make people think installing the software of your choice is something “shady” and not normal.

Proton is (or was) often recommended as a privacy-respecting email provider, so discussing whether or not to use Proton seems on-topic.

It’s not the subject of the post though, OP is sharing their conspiracy theory related to a privacy app

Proton Mail is operated by Proton AG, which is a for-profit corporation.

That being said, even though Proton Mail is probably more trustworthy than Google and Microsoft services, it’s still handled by a for-profit corporation and therefore can’t be fully trusted.

Nowadays if something is owned by a corp I wouldn’t recommend anyone to get too attached to it. Use it while you feel it’s worth, but prepare to swap for something else eventually.

In other words: don’t ever fully trust your data to company owned software, and always look for a backup solution.

I decided to just pay a little for email elsewhere because I don’t trust high volume services that are free. They are paying service costs somehow.

Smear campaign or hyperbolic criticism? It’s the age of outrage after all. But I also think Proton should be doing way better in general and are not above criticism.

It’s possible but it’s more likely that the proton people were actually right place right time to catch lightning in a bottle and keep fucking up because they’re stupid and didn’t plan for it.

It doesn’t hurt that people who supposedly care about anonymity, security and privacy actually care about if they’re buying from someone they disagree with or get scoffed at online for using protons services.

From The Intercept 2025, CEO Andy Yen made these posts on X:

“10 years ago, Republicans were the party of big business and Dems stood for the little guys, but today the tables have completely turned.”

“Until corporate Dems are thrown out, the reality is that Republicans remain more likely to tackle Big Tech abuses.”

Protonmail has been pro-trump strictly for its own economic interests. Its definitely believable that they would endorse right-wing media figures in its own economic interests.

This doesn’t mean you should go back to google. That’s silly. Just know that Protonmail or any corporation isn’t a long term solution. They aren’t immune to enshittification. And all businesses inherently have political interests. The only long term solution is open source and self hosted.
