They were then successful enough to buy out their sorta parent company later down the road. Apparently it’s complicated. I had suspected that this was a spinoff situation but not starting back in the '50s.

According to Wikipedia, the Japanese 7-Eleven corporation was founded in cooperation with the Southland Corp back in '59.
They were then successful enough to buy out their sorta parent company later down the road.
