I know that historically we have done some really evil things, but I’d thought we were past that.

The whole point of “Never Forget” was to remind us that we can never be passed that. The Nazis weren’t monsters, they were human beings. Human beings are capable of incredible atrocities, and we need to constantly remind ourselves of that. Make it the foundation of our whole society. But unfortunately the average person in unable to see past their own lifetime, and therefore sees no point in doing anything that could affect real change for future generations.
