The world snooker champion is Wu Yize! An amazing tournament and final that went to a decider and won by Wu.

interview of Wu right after the match:

Mandarin Chinese speaker here. I noticed the translator simplified some parts of his speech and thought a few interesting points were lost in translation. Here’s my attempt. Congrats Wu!! We love you!

A1: I think it’s because of faith. I’ve always wanted to become a world champion. I think I wanted it more than anyone else in this tournament. One day after another I’ve lived the same routine/life for a whole month. I’m willing to give my all in order to win.

A2: I want to thank my parents. I want to say in fact they are the real champions because since I dropped out of school as a kid, my dad has never left my side. He’s always been there for me. And my mom has been through a lot over the years (he on a separate occasion said she had health issues). Truly, they’re forever my source of mental strength/my rock.

A3: Actually at first there was a bit of misunderstanding. I thought people were booing. Later the staff told me the audience was cheering me on. I love you all so much. Thank you for your continued support for Snooker. Regardless of which player you support, I think all that matters is your love for the sport.

A4: Actually I just want a good night sleep. I’ve been very anxious ever since the second session. So I just want good quality sleep.

Wu came with his dad in England with all the money they had, and lived in a room with his dad, so he can achieve his dream and become the world champion snooker.
