Technology@lemmy.world•Google’s AI Is Destroying Search, the Internet, and Your BrainEnglish
5·17 days agoJust a quick correction. Robots.txt doesn’t block anything, it simply politely asks the search engine to not look here or use what is contained within. A lot of the search engines ignore this and catalogue the contents of the website anyway. And pretty much all of the AI database downloaders ignore it with impunity.

Technology@lemmy.world•Raspberry Pi is intentionally blocking RAM capacity upgradesEnglish
121·19 days agoAccording to the article you can still do this. It’s just you can’t replace a 2 GB with an 8 GB because the board will still only recognize 2GB of that chip.
This is to prevent the resellers from buying 2 GB boards for cheap, replacing them with cheap 8 GB chips, and then reselling them for just under retail of the official 8 GB boards.

Australia@aussie.zone•Sugar tax may prevent millions of dental procedures, study suggestsEnglish
3·1 month agoIllinois tried this a few years back to help shore up budget shortfalls. Number one, it didn’t bring in very much revenue. Number two, literally everyone hated it because it is a tax on poor people.
It was killed, I believe in less than a year.

Australia@aussie.zone•Sugar tax may prevent millions of dental procedures, study suggestsEnglish
64·1 month agoA tax on sugary drinks is literally a poor tax. You’re taxing poor people for one of the few pleasures they have in life that they can afford easily.
You know what would improve dental health across the board? Offering free dental insurance to every man woman and child in the country. You know what would stop people from having to buy sugary drinks so often? Fully fund food stamps across the board. Give people the ability to buy healthy whole foods to feed to their kids.
Edit: My mistake in not realizing this article was about Australia. My point still stands though. A tax on sugary drinks is only going to punish poor people unnecessarily and not lead to a dramatic reduction in soft drink consumption. It was tried here in my state and failed spectacularly.

63·2 months agoMy question is, what support will there be for NFC contactless payment? The convenience of being able to not have to carry a wallet full of cards is one of the biggest things holding me back from fully embracing GrapheneOS.

Technology@lemmy.world•Do Amber Alerts for Missing Kids Actually Work? | The WalrusEnglish
3·2 months agoI agree. One of the most frustrating things about Amber alerts is the fact that you can’t easily look at the alert after it’s been dismissed. I found out there is a way to find the alert but it’s not simple.
As to the article. In my opinion if Amber alerts save just one child a year they’re worth having.

Technology@lemmy.world•Woman Calls Out Doctor Wearing Smart Glasses During Consultation Where She Had To Take Off Her Clothes: 'They Need To Be Banned'English
5·2 months agoThe problem is that these doctors might not even know that the AI’s are spying on them. We don’t have enough legislative protection for our private data so they could sign up for these things and be under the impression that their data is secure meanwhile these AI companies are siphoning that data into their training models without telling them. It’s not like it hasn’t happened before.

Technology@lemmy.world•Woman Calls Out Doctor Wearing Smart Glasses During Consultation Where She Had To Take Off Her Clothes: 'They Need To Be Banned'English
111·2 months agoThat is one of the legitimate uses. Unfortunately it’s marred by the AI companies’ complete lack of trustworthiness when it comes to data privacy and security. You can’t know for certain they aren’t just wrapping your personal medical notes into their ever growing store of training data.

Technology@lemmy.world•Top economist warns that the AI math doesn’t make sense: 'Profits are currently being funded by investors rather than earned from customers'English
18·2 months agoThat’s pretty much what is driving the entire AI “boom”. It’s the Amazon effect.
Amazon, and Netflix to a certain extent as well as a number of other early internet startups, lost money for around 10 years before they started making shit tons. And everybody wants to be on that particular ride. So they are queueing up in every AI line they can find to hedge their bets on one of them being the one that survives and thrives. It doesn’t really occur to any of them that all of them could fail. Because “AI is the future”. Except there is no plan to monetize any of them. And so far every time one of them introduces a charge, people stop using it.

Infinite personalized music would become the most boring ass shit ever. Because the system would continually just play what you like and what you like would become narrower and narrower and narrower until it’s just the same sound over and over and over again.
There would be no listening to a randomized playlist that would occasionally pop in some new music from a new artist and the sound pops in your brain and you go “wow this is really amazing” and you discover a new song and sound that excites your brain. Instead you would just slowly become mentally numb listening to your infinite personalized slop.
