I know social media and economic conditions have made everything worse, but the notion that “everyone wants to be invited to a party but nobody wants to host one” has always been true. IIRC archaeologists found graffiti in ancient Roman bathhouses complaining that some people would hang around all day to try and wring a dinner party invitation out of other patrons.
